The Importance of Group Photographs at Weddings
Group photographs at weddings are a really important part of your wedding day. As a Yorkshire documentary wedding photographer, my approach is all about capturing the authentic moments of your day – the laughter, the stolen glances, and the raw emotion that makes your wedding uniquely yours. However, there’s one element of traditional wedding photography I firmly believe in: group photographs.
While my style focuses on storytelling, I always encourage couples to set aside a little time for group photos. These images aren’t just a formality, they’re a way to preserve the relationships that matter most to you. Here’s why group photos are important and how to make them stress-free and enjoyable on your big day.

Why Group Photographs at Weddings Matter
A Timeless Keepsake for Future Generations
Group photographs capture the family and friends who are there to celebrate with you. These photos become treasured heirlooms – the kind you’ll look back on in years to come and share with future generations. When I was a kid, my Granny used to regularly get her photo albums out and tell us who everyone was in the group shots from family weddings.
Celebrating Loved Ones Who Might Not Always Be There
Weddings often bring together family members living all over. Taking the time for group photos ensures you have a visual memory of these connections, especially grandparents, parents, and other significant people in your life.
Balancing the Candid and the Composed
While documentary photography captures the candid magic of your day, I feel that group photos have their place in a modern wedding.

Keeping It Simple: The Perfect Group Photo List
As someone specialising in documentary-style wedding photography, I recommend keeping your group photo list short and meaningful. A huge list can eat into your day, making it feel rushed and less relaxed. And believe me, you will get bored and have face ache from smiling!
Focus on the people who matter most. From experience, these are usually:
- Parents
- Grandparents (if applicable)
- Children (if applicable)
- Bridal Party (best man, maid of honour, bridesmaids, and groomsmen)
I suggest aiming for no more than 10 group shots. This ensures the process is quick and efficient, leaving more time for you to enjoy the day.

How to Make Group Photos Stress-Free
Plan Ahead
Before your wedding day, I try to have a catch up meeting to discuss the finer details and will send out a questionnaire to confirm the group shots.
Choose the Right Moment
The best time for group photos is usually after the ceremony before Grandma nips to the toilet and Dad goes to the bar! Because I work in a documentary style, the biggest magic of the day is the joy straight after the ceremony where I would first focus on the candid moments before starting the group shots.
Enlist Help
Ask a member of your bridal party or a trusted friend to assist with gathering people. This keeps the process moving smoothly and ensures no one gets left out.
Relax and Enjoy the Process
Group photos are part of your story. Take a moment to enjoy the smiles, hugs, and laughter that come with bringing your loved ones together.

Group Photos with a Documentary Twist
Even in posed group photos, there are lots of moments I love to document. I focus on capturing natural interactions – like the way a grandparent beams with pride, or how your best friends share a joke. These aren’t stiff, lifeless images, these are the real bits in between.

Final Thoughts
Group photographs are a small but significant part of your wedding day. They balance the candid, documentary-style moments with the timelessness of formal portraits, creating a complete story you’ll cherish forever.
As your Yorkshire wedding photographer, I aim to make this process seamless and enjoyable, so you can focus on what truly matters: celebrating your love with your friends and family.
